Before SSLIn my local community I participate in a few volunteer events in Malvern, specifically for VSK. VSK is a not-for-profit organisation that helps children with learning disability or life altering diseases. When my brother got cancer, the organisation helped us a lot with activities to distract both the child with the disease and the siblings. We met many new people and made a few friendships. One of the things I have done with the organisation was perform in front of quite a lot of people in their 'remembrance day' - a day where all the siblings, friends and parents of children who were helped by the organisation who have passed away are remembered.
I donate to a few things when I can, such as: the Ronald McDonald Foundation, and recently I donated my hair to the Princess Charlotte Alopecia Foundation. I have also participated in a few Relay for Life events - this was because I was invited by a friend and I truly wanted to participate. I am very interested in events around the world, and I discuss some of them with my friends and family. I do so by holding conversations with my friends about issues and events during recess and lunch at school, and with my parents during meal times and in the car. Some current events that interest me include the political situation in America with the presidential nomination. In our CLP we have thought of a few ideas and I believe I contributed well in the group. I have done this through listening to the people in my group, suggesting ideas and as a team we built on an idea we were all quite happy with. I have also attended every meeting that was organised. I do believe it is important to participate in the community because it helps keep you informed, develop your personality and points of view. It is also important to engage in the community so together we can change things in the school and neighbourhood. Learning During SSLCommunity Engagement is a very important category here at Snowy and I have definitely learnt new ways to incorporate this section of my life to daily routines.
Being able to run classes here really helps show how much work it takes to organise an event. I have participated in hosting the 1B student led activity, Bush dance night and the Minute to Win It class. Getting involved and taking the opportunity to work with students as well as teachers have really given me an insight to how communities can run. It showed me techniques to not only stay calm when some things don't go the way I wanted them to, but to keep going, so the community can continue with the activity. Being student leader also gave me an insight on how to improve some problems that the community may be having. It also helped me find a way to motivate everyone to strive towards the same goal. Whether it be with a reward, or a punishment, I am able to find something that can just give the right to push, so everyone feels motivated to accomplish something. Being in committees (I'm in the sustainability, cooking, CLP and TOAST committee) has been very helpful in developing the engagement I have in the community. Here we can implement new activities for the community, and am able to improve small things. It is very interesting to see the ideas people come up with, ways of how we can get others in the community to join in and be motivated. We cleaned up the garden in the sustainability committee and we will be planting seeds as well as make a mural for the vegie patch. In the cooking committee, we have cooked some foods and are organising things for the formal, as well as a Mad Hatters Lunch. Being in the committee has helped me see how influential I can be and how to approach certain situations where I would like to run a class or event. Overall, being in the SRC community has helped me find new things to do to help others. Doing duties and helping others accomplish their tasks has given me a sense of happiness as I am being helpful. I now try to find different things to do so I can do something influential. Strategies & Explanation
