Evening:
Last night for evening class, core 1 – 1A & 1B – had Minute to Win It. This is activity was based on the TV show “Minute to Win It”, where contestants needed to complete a series of challenges to the best of their ability – each within a minute. I did not get to participate in the games though. This was because I was running the game show! (yay! ^-^) We played a few games, and overall, the night was a success as everyone had fun. There were still the few that said the game was rigged because they didn’t win, but you know, you can’t please everyone.
It was actually really fun running the night (with a couple of other boys – yes, like every other TV show, there was only 1 female presenter). There were quite a few funny moments, and everyone started listening very well. Well, after we told them that they would lose points for their team if they were talking after we told them to be quiet.
Today:
Throughout the whole day today, 1B had Enviro Bike Ride. This consisted of an over 30 km bike ride around the Marlo area, and stopping at certain places to talk about significant topics relating to the area. The bike ride wasn’t as difficult as I imagined. There were some difficult hills that we had to get up, but overall, it was doable. My legs are hurting quite a bit right now, but that is expected I guess, since it was a long ride (as well as the fact that I rarely ever do exercise). However, I was actually surprised about how well I was coping, since I thought it would be a lot more straining than it was.
The main point of the bike ride was to point out all the interesting things that happen in the areas along the way. These ‘lessons’ were student led, and we talked about these things based on the research we did yesterday. It was very fascinating, the amount of thing that occur in such a small area of Marlo. We talked about Ostrich farms (because there we rode past one), biodiversity in national parks/reserves, the classification and preservation techniques used with endangered vegetation, as well as the process of logging, and how that all happens. Another boy from my group (Rhys) and I talked about back burning, and its importance. After we talked about the positives and negatives of this process, we hosted a little ‘scavenger hunt’ activity. Everyone found something interesting in the burnt area we were standing in, and then we facilitated a discussion about each observation.
Throughout this whole day, I learnt quite a bit about reserves, and the nature around me. This was a very interesting as well as fun activity. Although I did not appreciate getting a few leeches on me, or falling off the bike – actually, that was really fun, I did enjoy doing that – I enjoyed this activity, and I would do it again (after quite some time, because my legs are fairly sore).
With all the information I learnt today, I am now more informed of the areas around me. I could probably take this knowledge into the class room back at my home school – especially in science and geography. However, I would always keep it in mind in everyday life, and make sure to take care of the environment around me, because a few things in this world are fairly delicate.
